The Full Prayer, Assembled

Every word from Lessons 4 to 9, put back together into two rak'ahs, prayed slowly and understood.

Over the last four lessons, we took the prayer apart and learned it word by word: the opening, Al-Fatihah, the bow, the prostration, and the sitting.

Today we put it back together, and we pray it, knowing what every word means.

Last lesson's challenge

The last lesson ended with two parts: once a day, say the tashahhud slowly in one prayer, with its meaning in your head, and send salawat on the Prophet (pbuh) through the day, remembering the hadith in Sahih Muslim 408.

On your own paper or at the back of your notebook:

  1. On how many days did you say the tashahhud slowly, with its meaning?
  2. When in your day did you send salawat on the Prophet (pbuh)? Did any of those moments feel different?
  3. Finish this sentence honestly: When I sit at the end of the prayer, my mind is usually on __________.
Today

The whole prayer, in four parts

1 · A lesson in the masjid

A man prays three times, and three times he is told to go back. Then the Prophet (pbuh) teaches him.

2 · Every word, in order

We walk through the full two rak'ahs step by step, with every word from Lessons 4 to 9 and what it means.

3 · Mistakes and khushu

We look at three common mistakes, each tied to a text, and at what the Quran says about khushu.

4 · Pray it

We pray two rak'ahs together, slowly, with the meaning running in your head.

"Go back and pray"

Hadith · full hadith · part 1 of 2

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (SWT) (pbuh) entered the masjid. A man came in and prayed, then greeted the Prophet (pbuh). He returned the greeting and said: "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." The man went back and prayed as he had prayed before, then came and greeted the Prophet (pbuh), who said: "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." This happened three times. The man said: "By Him (SWT) who sent you with the truth, I cannot do it any better than this, so teach me."

He said: "When you stand for the prayer, say takbir. Then recite what is easy for you of the Quran. Then bow until you are at rest in ruku. Then rise until you stand straight. Then prostrate until you are at rest in sujud. Then rise until you are at rest sitting. Then do that throughout your whole prayer."

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA) · Sahih al-Bukhari 757 and Sahih Muslim 397 (wording of al-Bukhari) · [SAHIH]
Discussion

The Prophet (pbuh) did not tell the man to pray longer or to recite more. What did he keep repeating instead?

The word in that hadith

Tuma'ninah: being at rest

Three times in his answer, the Prophet (pbuh) said "until you are at rest": in ruku, in sujud, and sitting. Rising from ruku, he said "until you stand straight."

Being at rest is called tuma'ninah. It means your body has settled and is still in a position before you move on. Of everything the Prophet (pbuh) taught the man, this is what he repeated.

In your notebook

Start today's page: Lesson 10, The Full Prayer, Assembled. Write "Irji' fa-salli, fa-innaka lam tusalli" and its meaning, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." Then write "Tuma'ninah": being at rest in each position before moving on.

Malik ibn al-Huwayrith (RA) said: "We came to the Prophet (pbuh) as young men close in age, and we stayed with him for twenty days and nights. The Messenger of Allah (SWT) (pbuh) was merciful and gentle. [...] He said: '[...] Pray as you have seen me praying. [...]'"

Narrated by Malik ibn al-Huwayrith (RA) · Sahih al-Bukhari 631 · [SAHIH] · part of a longer hadith

He said this as he sent them home to teach their families. Every word in the next six slides reached us through companions (RA) who learned it from him, by watching him and listening to him.

Every word, in your own handwriting

Turn back through your notebook, from Lesson 6 to Lesson 9. Every word of the prayer itself, from Allahu Akbar to the salam, is already there, in two columns: the words, and what they mean.

That notebook is now a full translation of your salah, written by you.

In your notebook

Go back through the pages for Lessons 6 to 9. Put a small tick next to each line you can say from memory with its meaning. The lines without a tick are your study list for this week. If you were away for a lesson, fill in its lines from today's walkthrough slides.

Abu Qatadah (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (SWT) (pbuh) said: "The worst thief among people is the one who steals from his prayer." They said: "O Messenger of Allah (SWT) (pbuh), how does he steal from his prayer?" He said: "He does not complete its ruku and its sujud."

Praying without the meaning

Racing can be seen. This one can't: the body is still, but the mind is somewhere else. Remember this hadith from Lesson 4.

The fix

Everyone's mind wanders sometimes. When yours does, come back to the English of the line you are on. That is what your notebook and your cards are for.

How scholars explain it · a summary, not a quote

The Arabic word is khashi'un, from khushu. Scholars of tafsir, such as Ibn Kathir, explain khushu as a heart that is humble and turned fully to the prayer, together with a body that is still and calm.

In your notebook

Write "Qad aflahal-mu'minun, alladhina hum fi salatihim khashi'un" and its meaning. Then write the word "khushu" with one line in your own words on what it looks like.

The same word comes back: al-khashi'in, translated here as "the humbly submissive." The second ayah tells you who they are: people who are certain that they will meet their Lord.

Ask yourself

On the days the prayer feels heavy, what is missing? What changes if you remember that you are meeting Him (SWT)?

Pray together · about 13 minutes, including getting there and back

Two rak'ahs, slowly

Before

Come with wudu. Make rows following the masjid's arrangements for boys and girls. Before Allahu Akbar, stand still for three slow breaths and bring to mind who you are about to speak to.

During

In every position, be at rest first, then say its words. Let the English of each line run in your head. If your mind wanders, come back to the line you are on.

After

Stay sitting for one quiet minute before anyone talks. Ask yourself: which line did I mean the most today?

Depending on the time, we either each pray two voluntary rak'ahs on our own, side by side, or pray the prayer that is due together.

The promise, kept

Every word, in English

The promise from Lesson 1

By the end of this course, you will pray two rak'ahs understanding every single word you say to Allah (SWT), in English. Nothing you say in salah will be a mystery sound.

You just prayed those two rak'ahs. In Lesson 1 we said that worship is what love does. You bowed to Al-Adheem, the Most Great, and went down in sujud to Al-A'la, the Most High. This time you knew what you were saying to Him (SWT), Al-Wadud, the One who loved you first.

If some lines still feel shaky, that is normal. Your cards are there for exactly that.

In your notebook

At the bottom of today's page, under "In my own words", write one sentence: what is different about your prayer now that you know what you are saying?

Groups of 3 to 5 · about 6 minutes · everyone answers at least one

Put today's lesson into your own words

  1. The man in today's hadith prayed three times before he said "teach me." What made it possible for him to finally learn? What does that say about asking for help with your own prayer?
  2. Racing through the prayer, and praying without the meaning. Which one is easiest for someone your age to fall into, and why? What is one practical fix that would actually work?
  3. Surah Al-Baqarah 2:45-46 says the prayer is difficult except for the humble, who are certain they will meet their Lord. How does knowing what you are saying change how heavy or light the prayer feels?
